Diversity Library
Reflecting the colors of the world – Empowering children through Storytelling and Cultural Exchange
Gaze In __ to my diversity library tailored to children and families. We are living in a time where diversity awareness is finally growing, bringing attention to the many layers of identity, family, and personal stories. The Diversity Library is my response to this movement – a space where children and families can see themselves reflected in the books they read and the world around them.
What is the Diversity Library?
More than just a collection of books, the Diversity Library is an inclusive, interactive space for children (ages 3-12) and their families. It offers a curated selection of stories, games, and creative resources that center on themes of inclusion, intersectionality, and cultural representation – giving every child the chance to see themselves in the stories they explore.
A Growing Impact
Since its launch in 2021, the Diversity Library has already changed lives – from children proudly recognizing themselves in a story saying “Mama, he looks like me”, to parents discovering books that mirror their family’s journey saying “I’ve never seen a book with a black girl who looks like my daughter. This means so much”. Through collaborations with authors, educational institutions and community, I expand this initiative, bringing inclusive storytelling to new audiences through workshops and exhibitions.
What happens in the diversity library?
The library is a safe space where children and their families can explore books, toys and games on the topic Diversity. They gather to read, discuss, and reflect on books that explore identity, belonging, and diversity. These sessions foster self-awareness and empathy, offering:
Book readings & discussions – Exploring representation and inclusion.
Creative storytelling – Children and parents create their own illustrated stories by provided craft kits.
Cultural exchange – Families contribute their favorite books, and making the library a shared safe space.
Many multicultural families struggle to find books that truly reflect their experiences. The Diversity Library bridges this gap by offering:
Representation – Stories featuring diverse protagonists and perspectives.
Reflection – A safe space to explore identity and belonging.
Engagement – Hands-on workshops that turn learning into a creative experience.
